Sinfónica de Minería The Therese M. Grojean Classical Series

Sinfónica de Minería: An Orchestra Dedicated to Excellence, Community, and Inspiration | Sinfónica de Minería stands as one of Latin America’s most illustrious orchestras, celebrated not only for its musical prowess but also for its vibrant cultural impact and dedication to transformative social change through music.

Established in 1978, the orchestra has been under the guidance of Grammy-award-winning Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto since 2006. During this time, it has earned significant accolades, including five Grammy nominations and a Latin Grammy for “Best Classical Composition” for their recording of Paquito D’Rivera’s “Concierto venezolano.” Notably, Sinfónica de Minería became the first Mexican orchestra to collaborate with the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label.

At the core of Sinfónica de Minería’s philosophy is an unwavering commitment to musical brilliance. Since its inception, the orchestra has excelled in performing a wide repertoire, spotlighting both renowned and lesser-known works in Mexico. They have presented masterpieces such as Hector Berlioz’s “Grande messe des morts” and the complete orchestral works of Gustav Mahler. The orchestra has collaborated with an array of global talents, including Kathleen Battle, Diana Damrau, Joshua Bell, Maureen Forrester, Hans Richter-Hasser, Gabriela Montero, Philippe Quint, Leonid Kogan, Pacho Flores, Francisco Araiza, Ramón Vargas, John Ogdon, Sonya Yoncheva, Fiorenza Cossotto, Nicanor Zabaleta,  Elina Garanca, Juan Diego Florez, Eugen Fodor, Anne-Marie McDermott, Jorge Federico Osorio, Nadine Sierra, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Vadin Gluzman.

Deeply rooted in its Latin heritage, Sinfónica de Minería has commissioned over fifty contemporary works that have become pillars of Mexican music, such as Gabriela Ortiz´s “Suite voltaje”, Mario Lavista’s “Ficciones” or Carlos Sánchez Gutiérrez’s “Gota de noche”. The orchestra is currently undertaking an ambitious project: to record all orchestral pieces by Silvestre Revueltas, many of which have never been recorded to such high standards before.

The impact of Sinfónica de Minería transcends beyond musical performances. It recognizes music’s unique power to connect, uplift, and catalyze change, positioning itself as a symbol of inclusivity and societal engagement. During its traditional Temporada de verano, which includes nine programs throughout July and August at the legendary Sala Nezahualcóyotl in Mexico City, the orchestra opens its rehearsals to the public, offering free access to the enriching world of high-caliber music. Renowned soloists from the ensemble regularly conduct masterclasses and educational initiatives, nurturing the next generation of musical talent.

In an era often marked by division, Sinfónica de Minería’s community-focused projects exemplify how music can bridge cultural divides, mend spirits, and illuminate a hopeful future.

Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez: A Mardi Gras Celebration Weekend

The music of New Orleans and Cuba is bound by deep, historic roots – each born from African rhythms, shaped by European harmonies, and burst forth in lively public squares. Over centuries, this shared heritage evolved into the sounds of jazz, son, and rumba that still pulse across the Gulf. Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez will highlight that cultural vibrant exchange between Cuba and New Orleans through musical vignettes, in addition to their own inspired originals.

Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez leave audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing. A classical pianist by training, Rodriguez was discovered by his mentor Qunicy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival while Martinez honed his craft on the streets of Havana, learning the deeply-rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music.

Their unique backgrounds create an extraordinary synergy. Rodriguez trained in Havana’s rigorous classical conservatories. His artistry is as much shaped by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz. Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana. Over the years, he has collaborated with icons such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis. Together these two master musicians take listeners on a unique and exciting journey through a variety of moods and influences, from Cuban classics to collaborative original compositions and unexpected favorites.

“What makes this duo completely different is that I came from the folkloric side and Alfredo came from the classical side,” says Martinez.”You put those things together and you come out with an extraordinary and different sound.” The Grammy-nominated artists first collaborated on Rodriguez’s 2012 album The Invasion Parade, and since then, have had rare opportunities to perform together as a duo. Their collaborative album, Duologue, produced by the legendary Quincy Jones, established the pair as a leading force in the jazz world. And their reputation grows with every unforgettable live performance.

A Celebration of The Meters: Dumpstaphunk + George Porter Jr. + Cyril Neville: A Mardi Gras Celebration Weekend

To open the conversation about this act, it is necessary to go back to 1974 in New Orleans, when The Meters released their fifth studio album, a funk-filled collection of tunes they called Rejuvenation. Produced by Allen Toussaint and featuring Ziggy Modeliste on drums and vocals, Art Neville on keyboards and vocals, Leo Nocentelli on guitar, and George Porter Jr on bass, the record has since become a funk classic. Sampled by Public Enemy and with a slew of its songs covered by the likes of Widespread Panic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and The Grateful Dead (Hey Pocky Way), Rejuvenation made a splash from the get-go. Rock critic Jon Pareles called it “a high point of 1970s funk,” in his review for Rolling Stone.

Fifty years on, Dumpstaphunk — Art Neville’s son Ivan’s band — is throwing a party in honor of this seminal album and we’re all invited. Joining the celebration will be none other than George Porter Jr and Cyril Neville. Dumpstaphunk’s funky pedigree is evident in its “colossal low end and filthy grooves,” as Bass Player magazine put it perfectly. That’s how they like their funk – filthy and bottom-heavy.

The Revivalists: A Mardi Gras Celebration Weekend

February 6 & 7 @7pm

Eight-piece rock ‘n’ roll collective The Revivalists – David Shaw [lead vocals, guitar], Zack Feinberg [guitar], Andrew Campanelli [drums], George Gekas [bass], Ed Williams [pedal steel guitar], Rob Ingraham [saxophone], Michael Girardot [keyboard, trumpet], and PJ Howard [drums, percussion] – have made the journey from hole-in-the-wall gigs to sold-out shows at hallowed venues, multiplatinum success, more than 800 million streams and major media praise. Their fifth album, Pour It Out Into The Night (Concord Records) is a life-affirming album about living in the moment, fueled by lessons in gratitude and life realizations. As the world came to a standstill in the years since their last album, Take Good Care, personal experiences and life challenges abounded, with band members having their first children, getting married, and navigating the mental hurdles of lockdown. On lead single “Kid” – a hopeful anthem about capturing the essence of life, self-belief, and living for the spirit – piano peeks through bright acoustic guitar as a bold beat powers the chantable chorus, “Hey kid, just sing the songs that wake the dead, then you keep them ringing in your head.” “Kid” introduces an album that offers a nostalgic hopefulness rooted in living for who you are, an unburdening, and an appreciation for the here and now. Renowned for their live prowess, soulful alt-rock anthems, distinct mix of many of the classic styles of American music, and outward generosity through their philanthropic Rev Causes initiative, The Revivalists broke through with 2015’s Men Amongst Mountains, which featured the double-platinum smash single and Billboard Hot 100 hit “Wish I Knew You.”
